I’m Different by 2 Chainz
Rapper 2 Chainz released his new song “I’m Different” recently, and it has quite a lot of opinion on it out there. Produced by DJ Mustard & Mike Free, “I’m Different” is the latest song. Released on November 8, 2012, 2 Chainz premiered his latest music video on December 23rd, 2012 – people joked about it being the supposed end of the world that day, and it was allegedly part of the reasoning behind the release date that day. The cover art for the single of “I’m Different” referred to the state of Georgia, his home state. The song itself is off of the album “Based on a T.R.U. Story” – which translates to B.O.A.T.S which may explain why he is riding around on a boat.
The American rapper, from College Park in Georgia, started out as part of a duo in Playaz Circle, where he and lifetime best friend Earl Conyers had a successful single “Duffle Bag Boy” and were signed up with Ludacris on his “Disturbing tha Peace” record label. Eventually though, 2 Chainz left the record deal to advance his career, and has shot to further fame ever since.
The lyrics to the sound are very confrontational and is about proving his point to the world that he isn’t just the same as every other rapper who appears out of nowhere. Though there is the usual gamesmanship, proving to everybody he is the best, 2 Chainz tries to change it up from the usual chatter about the same generic stuff you get from the rest.
In the video itself, directed by young up and coming director Elisha Smith-Leverock (who directed the video for The Saturdays song My Heart Takes Over) 2 Chainz – wearing a leopard print tracksuit – is seen to be riding through the streets of Miami, on a boat none the less, as he raps and the camera pays close attention to his unique and trademark jewellery, as his friends drive through the streets being chased by the police. However, eventually the two men in the car turn on the officer and turn the tables – holding him up at gunpoint, and cuffing him to the car.
As the video goes on and on, more and more people start to appear in 2 Chainz boat. There is also the rather comical turnaround of a man offering to wash cars with no shirt on – usually this is a female doing this – as two girls sit in a hoodless car, enjoying the view as he washes the car for them. There is also the shot of a party on the boat, with the boat now being towed across the road.
2 Chainz is signed up to the record label Def Jam Records, who also have Fall Out Boy, Gorrilaz, Kanye West, and Nas among a host of other high level names in the music industry. Def Jam Recordings were founded in 1983, and have been a hub of the American music scene for years – primarily in the hip hop genre – and 2 Chainz is well on his way up the ranks at Def Jam Recordings.
