Cups (Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone”) by Anna Kendrick
It makes sense that a hit musical would also have a hit single, and that is exactly the case with the song “Cups” from the movie Pitch Perfect. Pitch Perfect was a musical comedy released in 2012 and directed by Jason Moore. The movie starred Elizabeth Banks, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Kendrick, and more.
Pitch Perfect was successful at the box office, and the song “Cups (When I’m Gone)” is a single from the album’s soundtrack. In the movie, the character played by Anna Kendrick performed the song with only a yellow plastic cup for the song’s percussion. The song has since become extremely popular.
The song “Cups (When I’m Gone)” from the movie Pitch Perfect is actually a cover of the song “Cups (You’re Gonna Miss Me)” from the band Lulu and the Lampshades. The original song comes from the soundtrack of Pitch Perfect released by Universal Music. The single by Anna Kendrick, however, has been remixed and extended from the one on the soundtrack and is designated as the Director’s Cut. The music video for the song was released in April of 2013 and it is directed by Jason Moore, the same director from the movie. It was also produced by Josh Goldstein. The music video stars Anna Kendrick.
The music video begins with a scene in an old-fashioned diner complete with milkshakes, waitresses serving food and ringing up orders, and cooks frying the food. The video then shows Kendrick in the back of the kitchen working with dough and flour. She kneads the dough and then rolls it out. While she is doing this, she looks a various postcards from around the world.
After she sticks the biscuits in the oven, she hangs around the kitchen not sure what to do. She then starts adding percussion with a cup she used to cut out the dough. Kendrick sings as she moves around the diner and occasionally uses cups to add the beat. All of the customers also use the cups for the beat as Kendrick picks up dishes and wipes tables. At the end, Kendrick returns to the kitchen when her timer goes off. With one last look, she leaves the diner.
The song “Cups (When I’m Gone)” speaks about leaving for faraway places and how much the person is going to be missed when he or she is gone. The first verse talks about having a ticket for being gone a long time and leaving tomorrow. The singer expresses, though, that he or she would like some company. The second verse speaks about being in a place with beautiful views, mountains, and rivers. The sights are pretty but they “would be prettier with you.” The chorus talks about how she is going to be missed.
