The upcoming American R&B singer and rapper August Alsina debuted in 2014 through ‘I Luv This Shit’ featuring Trinidad James, promising to equalize the performance of his mentor, Usher. ‘No Love’ is the last single promoting his first studio album ‘Testimony’, featuring Nicki Minaj.
As the owner of a luxurious car, August Alsina leads home a beautiful woman, but his thoughts are directed towards his true love, represented by Nicki Minaj. While the unknown woman is associated with images of purity such as a white rose, Nicki Minaj feeling to be betrayed by the attitude of her lover, is represented through negative images according to her anger and revolt: a black rose, a clock breaking or a thunder emerging.
The reason why the couple is disconnected is shown through a flashback. While attempting to say goodbye to the other woman, August Alsina remembers the happy moments spent with Nicki Minaj before he was invited to a party. Leaving her disappointed and refusing to answer to her calls and messages during the party, the man is aware of the damage he created and as consequence he apologizes by creating a bed of red roses for his girlfriend, in order to be forgiven. The black rose that broke similarly to be clock is now recreated, turning to red and blossoming, as a symbol of Nicki Minaj’s intention to give another chance to their relationship.
Initially released as a single promoting only August Alsina’s vocals, ‘No Love’ was revamped as a remix, including Nicki Minaj’s guest performance. The fifth song promoting the debuting album ‘Testimony’ followed the success registered with ‘Benediction’ featuring Rick Ross.
Released in July 2014, ‘No Love’ is the collective creation of August Alsina and Nicki Minaj, accompanied by Christopher Gholson, D. Brown and M. Wade, writing songs for Kanye West, Nelly, Usher or Lil’ John. ‘No Love’ is one of the songs displaying Nicki Minaj’s ability to sing R&B, not only hip hop. Christopher Gholson known as Drumma Boy mastered the song, also producing songs for Snoop Dogg (‘More Malice’), Lil’ John (‘ Throw It Up’) or Rick Ross (‘Here I Am’).
The video created for ‘No Love’ was released in August 2014, Benny Boom, a recurrent collaborator of Nicki Minaj, being responsible for it. The American director also designed for Nicki Minaj ‘Out Of My Mind’ or ‘Right By My Side’, in addition directing videos for other hip hop or R&B artists such as Sean Paul, Nas or 50 Cent.
