Sail by Awolnation
Awolnation is an electronic rock band formed in 2009. The band’s front man is Aaron Bruno, who has been a part of other bands including Hometown Hero, Influence of Giants, and Insurance. The band was formed after Bruno was asked to do so by Red Bull Records, and the name comes from an old nickname of Bruno’s in high school.
Aaron Bruno writes all the songs for the band, and the other members include Drew Stewart, Hayden Scott, Devin Hoffman, and Kenny Carkeet. The band has released one studio album and three extended plays in their history. Some of their songs have been featured on various televisions shows, and they are currently working on their second studio album.
The song “Sail” comes from the band’s extended play called Back from Earth but it was also released on their album Megalithic Symphony. “Sail” was written by Aaron Bruno and released by Red Bull Records in 2011. The song is the band’s most successful single so far, and it has appeared on music charts in not only the U.S. but in Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, and Austria. The music video was directed by Cameron Duddy who has gone on to direct other music videos for the band. The video features Aaron Bruno but none of the other band members.
The music video begins with Bruno running up to a house at night. He goes inside and closes the blinds. There are scenes interspersed with his eyes taking in a bright light. Bruno runs through the house and goes through a desk looking for something. He looks through a briefcase and then under a bed. He finds an old voice recorder in which he is singing into while looking at pictures taped to the wall.
All of the sudden, bright lights are seen coming from outside and stuff is flying around the room. Bruno goes to the bathroom and gets into the tub while something opens the door and scans the house with a green light. It finds a spacesuit in the closet. Bruno is also seen playing the piano. At the end of the video, Bruno is seen floating up into space towards the bright lights. He drops the voice recorder.
The song “Sail” can be interpreted as a person who is losing his or her mind. The singer is also inviting another person into his or her madness. The song talks about blaming “it on my A.D.D.” or blaming his “own sick pride.” The song also speaks of reaching out for help or maybe ending the suffering by taking his or her own life. The singer obvious feels different from other people and sees himself as being a “different breed.” The song is unique in that the chorus is one word only and that is “sail.” Bruno sings/yells the word over and over. The song ends with a request to “sail with me into the dark.”
