Hurricane by Bridgit Mendler
Bridgit Mendler is a singer, songwriter, and musician most famous for her acting career. Mendler stars on the Disney Channel show Good Luck Charlie but has also been involved in several films and other television shows including Wizards of Waverly Place. Mendler got her big break when a couple of her songs from the movie Lemonade Mouth climbed to the top of the charts.
Since then, Mendler released a debut album in 2012 entitled Hello My Name Is… Her most famous songs include “Somebody,” “Forgot to Laugh,” and “Ready or Not.” Mendler’s style of music can be described as pop, R&B, reggae, hip hop, and soul.
The song “Hurricane” comes from Mendler’s album Hello My Name Is… and was released in February 2013 as the second single from that album. The song was written by Mendler, Andrew Goldstein, Evan Bogart, and Emanuel Kiriakou. The song was released by Hollywood Records, and the music video came out in April of 2013.
The music video was directed by Robert Hales and produced by Ayo Davis, Luti Fagbenie, and Nicole Acacio. Rockhard was the production company and it was shot in London, although Mendler wears a shirt that says New York City. Besides Mendler, the music video features Naomi Scott as Mendler’s best friend. Scott also appeared in the movie Lemonade Mouth.
The music video for “Hurricane” begins with a picturesque shot of London. The sun is seen rising through time-lapse photography. Mendler is then seen lying on a bed. She gets up and starts to sing and rap. She is also seen on the streets, but the majority of time, she stands in front of a big white screen wearing the New York City shirt. At one point, Mendler opens a door to find Naomi Scott there and the two hug. Mendler and Scott walk the streets, visit an art gallery, ride in a taxi, and dance at a club. About halfway through the song, the sun sets, and London is seen at night complete with double decker buses.
The style of “Hurricane” is a mix of different genres like pop, R&B, and hip hop. Mendler actually raps some of the lyrics to the verses. Mendler sings over and over about feeling like she is in the “eye of a hurricane.” When she is together with her boyfriend, she feels calm but knows that it cannot last long. Eventually, the clouds and rain will come again. The song also makes several comparisons to love as a hurricane. The guy she sings about comes in and sweeps her off her feet like a “sneaky tornado.” She tries to board “up the windows” and lock up her heart but when he smiles, she lets him in. When they are in each other’s arms, it feels like being “in the eye of a hurricane.”
