Afrojack, who is also known by his real name Nick van de Wall, is a DJ and music producer from the Netherlands. His songs have climbed the charts all over the world, and Afrojack has released three extended plays and several singles over the course of his career.
He is most famous for his remixes of popular songs, and these remixed songs are from artists like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, PSY, Bruno Mars, Pitbull, Snoop Dog, the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, and many others. Afrojack has been consistently named one of the top DJs in the world, and he even runs a recording company called Wall Records. Afrojack’s music can be described as electro house and progressive house.
The song “As Your Friend” was released in February of 2013. It does not appear of any of Afrojack’s records but was released as a single. The song also features R&B artist Chris Brown who adds his vocals. “As Your Friend” was written by Afrojack, Chris Brown, Jared Cotter, and Melin Shikder. It has produced by Afrojack and released by Wall Records.
The music video was released in March of 2013 and directed by the Dutch duo called Opslaan Als made up of Sander van Driel and Kevin Boitelle. The music video does not feature Chris Brown although he provides the main vocals to the song.
The music video for “As Your Friend” puts together several random elements. The video begins with two dancers, a male and female, doing ballet movies on a stage. The stage is seen throughout the video with lots of fog around it and some bright lights. As the video progresses, several women are seen dragging a throne of sorts across the stage. Afrojack is seen sitting on the throne and presiding over the women who proceed to take off their robes and dance in scantily clad clothing, sometimes suggestively.
There are also scenes of Afrojack riding a motorcycle across the stage, having a bald eagle land on his outstretched hand, and setting the stage on fire. Towards the end, the scenes cut quicker between the eagle, fish, the dancing women, Afrojack, and an older man using a chainsaw. About halfway through the video, more and more effects and unique camera angles are used.
The song makes reference to a relationship that has gone south and the singer is wondering what happened. The singer is no longer the other person’s man but has instead woken up “as your friend.” The song only includes one verse that speaks about leaving a relationship because he cannot live like that and is ready to go. The singer tells the other person not to ask why because “there are too many things.” It also speaks of standing on the edge on a cliff. The chorus of the song reiterates how the singer woke up just “as your friend.”
