Summertime isn’t over, at least not for Chris Brown, Usher and Rick Ross, singing about a perfect love in “New Flame”. Since its debut, the song displays a bright background, reminding of the lazy days of summer, when everybody seeks for a refreshing place to have a good time.
In the case of the artists performing “New Flame”, everything and everyone is dressed in white, the color associated with a chilling sensation, starting with smartphones, speakers and swimsuits. The only disconnecting details are golden-plated sandals of a woman enjoying her time next to Chris Brown and the masked lady in red accompanying Usher.
The metaphor of flame is suggested by a big letter “X”, the name of Chris Brown’s album studio, burning, showing the intense feeling that a new love can create in somebody’s existence.
All contributing artists are dressed in white as well. Chris Brown is dancing on an island, with a white umbrella, surrounded by beautiful women, enjoying the warm sunlight. Usher is also wearing a completely white suit, performing steps inspired by Michael Jackon’s style on a white gangway, while Rick Ross is the only one laying obviously on a white chair, in the company of women dressed in white swimsuits.
The video covers day and night moments, the daily episode being more numerous. The only scenes shot during the night are those in which Chris Brown and Usher are dancing on the sand, apparently invoking fire, since flames appear once their heels touch the sand.
“New Flame” was meant to be a success, since Chris Brown joined forces with one of the R&B artists inspiring his style, Usher. Rick Ross performs the rapping fragment of the song, as guest artist, transforming “New Flame” into an attractive mixture of pop, R&B and hip hop. Originally, “New Flame” was released in March 2014, featuring only Rick Ross, later in June 2014, Chris Brown invited Usher to contribute to the song.
The video created for “New Flame” was directed by Colin Tilley, who has previously collaborated with Chris Brown for “Don’t Wake Me Up” or “Don’t Judge Me”. The famous American director has also created inciting videos for Nicki Minaj, David Guetta or Jason Derulo. In the case of “New Flame”, Colin Tilley preferred a simple, yet suggestive perspective: everything in white, to express the purity of a new flame, meaning a new love.
