If Christina Aguilera`s name doesn`t need any introduction, the American boy band A Great Big World, emerging from `The Voice` show is one of Aguilera`s biggest success as a coach. Originally the song was performed by Ian Axel on his solo album released in 2011, `This is The New Year`, but was also included on the two-member group`s album `Is There Anybody Out There?` released by Epic Records in September 2013. Few months ago, the song stirred the interest of famous pop singer Christina Aguilera, who decided to record with the band a new version of the slow, touching ballad, propelling the band into the league of famous pop artists.
Christina Aguilera`s influence is visible even in the scenario of the video, reminding of `Beautiful`, where the pop diva displayed the inner struggles of socially marginalized characters. In `Say Something`, the accent is different: the artists are willing to show three harmonic, natural stories, that can be saved through love: a disconnected couple, a child frightened by her parents` fight and the loss of the beloved on a hospital bed. With the static movements of Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino on a piano, while Christina Aguilera enters the scene and seems to be the connection through the stories as a messenger of pain, the video of `Say Something` is a simple, natural, yet an attractive creation.
Starting with the minimalistic background, where the bed becomes a symbol of soul`s need to rest, to find shelter or love, the characters` style and movements highlights the idea that less is more. Christina Aguilera in a classical black dress suggests the idea that life is simpler than we are used to believe and every treasure we are hunting is useless, while losing what we truly should cherish. The actors implied also wear simple, natural outfits, perfectly matching their slow gestures. The insertion of a piano on the scene is no coincidence, characters live and die, according to the song`s rhythm on the piano keys. When the tune is mild, characters are shown crying or thinking, while when the decision was taken, the tempo is increasing, showing the tension existing in their souls.
The video for `Say Something` was released on November 2013, being a surprise for Christopher Sims` fans and critics, used with his extravagant, dynamic style as seen in Hawk Nelson – `The Only Thing I have left` or Ignite – `My Judgment Day`. For `Say Something`, director Christopher Sims focused on sensitive images as teardrops, trembling touch of a recently dead person or the hiding under bed of a scared child, revealing an unknown face of his creativity.
All in all, the video accompanying the song `Say Something` is a natural representation of its simple, yet direct keywords: `Say something, I`m giving up on you`.
