Inner Ninja by Classified ft. David Myles
Classified, whose real name is Luke Boyd, is a rapper and producer from Canada. He got his start in the music industry by starting his own record company, called Half Life Records, and releasing his first studio album in 1995. Since then, Classified has worked with many other independent artists while furthering his rap career by opening for such artists as Snoop Dog, Ludacris, Nelly, and the Black Eyed Peas.
Classified has been hugely successful in Canada having one of the highest selling rap albums in that country as well as several hit songs. Some of his hit singles include “Oh…Canada,” “Anything Goes,” and “That Ain’t Classy.”
One of Classified’s best known songs is “Inner Ninja” which also features fellow Canadian singer/songwriter David Myles. “Inner Ninja” comes from Classified’s self-titled album released in January of 2013 as his third major studio release. The album was released by Sony Music, and “Inner Ninja” was its first single. The song was written by Classified and David Myles. The music video for “Inner Ninja” was directed by Randall Thorne, better known as RT! and produced by John Nadalin and Rory Halsall. The NE Creative Group was the production company. Besides Classified and David Myles, the video features a group of kids from martial arts schools.
The music video for “Inner Ninja” begins with an introduction and credits just like a movie. It then shows two men stealing a bag of candy from a kid. The kid puts on a ninja suit and then chases the men. Classified is seen in a martial arts getup with a black robe. There are also young kids in white uniforms hitting concrete blocks and wooden boards and breaking them. At one point, the kids throw shooting stars that land in the wall around Classified and David Myles. Classified catches one while Myles is seen singing dressed up in a similar black uniform.
The martial arts kids also add background vocals to the tune. There are many shots of the young kids throwing punches and kicks in training and handling different weapons. Classified and David Myles play their teachers. Towards the end, the kid in the beginning is seen taking out the guys that stole the candy and retrieving the bag with help from friends.
The song “Inner Ninja” speaks about finding your inner strength and overcoming every obstacle that comes your way. The first verse talks about being down and out with “too many bad decisions” and “being a first class rookie.” However, he has overcome his enemies and there is “no stoppin’ me” since finding his “inner ninja.” The second verse speaks about the highs and lows we all go through and getting roughed up sometimes. The key is to get up again and push through it, dropping “bad habits,” knocking out opponents, and climbing “the highest mountains.” This is possible because he has found his “inner ninja.”
