Made in the USA by Demi Lovato
Like many other big names in the music industry, Demi Lovato got her start as singer/songwriter by first getting known as an actress. Lovato started out in her acting career starring in the television show Barney & Friends and then moving onto her own series Sonny With a Chance. She has also starred in the TV film Camp Rock.
These roles landed her a record deal and a debut album entitled Don’t Forget, which was released in 2008. Since then, Lovato has scored big hits with her songs “Give Your Heart a Break,” “Skyscraper,” and “Heart Attack.” Lovato has also been a judge for The X Factor, won several music awards, and headlined major concert tours.
Lovato’s newest hit, “Made in the USA,” comes from her fourth studio album entitled Demi. “Made in the USA” was released as the album’s second single from Hollywood Records in July of 2013. The song was written by Lovato along with Jason Evigan, Jonas Jeberg, Corey Chorus, and Blair Perkins. The music video for “Made in the USA” was directed by Ryan Pallotta and co-directed by Lovato herself. Pallotta has worked with other artists such as Ariana Grande and Stefano. The video was produced by Anthony Mandler, Heather Heller, and Andrew Lerios, and BHC Films was the production company. The music video also features Dustin Milligan and Aimee Teegarden as the couple in love.
The music video begins with Lovato looking out the window of a car in a seemingly desolate place. There are shots of Milligan as a solider, him and Teegarden being together, and of a blowing wheat field. There are also scenes of a carnival with a man on stilts and games. At this carnival, Lovato begins singing, and it is here that the man and woman catch each other’s eyes for the first time. There are more scenes of them spending time together and supposedly falling in love. Pretty soon, however, the man has to leave and is seen driving off in a car with the woman left behind.
There are then scenes of the man as a solider on the battlefield and the woman at home writing letters and remembering the time they spent together. Interspersed with their story is Lovato singing and playing the guitar. At the end, the man comes home to the woman.
The song “Made in the USA” is a love song. The lyrics speak of two people falling in love, and their love won’t break because it was “made in the USA.” Their love runs “like a Chevy” and the guy opens “doors like a gentleman.” The song also speaks of the couple spending time together all over the country from the “West Coast” to the “East Coast,” from “hair blowing in the wind” to “walking in the city lights.” Overall, the singer wants “the whole world to know” that their love is forever because it was “made in the USA.”
