Guts Over Fear ft. Sia by Eminem
‘Guts Over Fear’ is the second musical experiment between the American rapper Eminem and the Australian electropop singer Sia, reminding of ‘8 Mile’ story. The song is a personal release from the fears, refraining persons perform what they intend. After the success registered with ‘Beautiful Pain’ included in the ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’, released in 2013, the two artists joined forces for a dynamic hip hop song.
The debut of the video is a suite of succeeding scenes, such as the individual training of a boxer, his attempts to be an efficient kitchen helper, his father’s dependence of alcohol, as well as his troubles with his girlfriend. Similarly to any young man wanting to form a family, the main character tries to earn money through a decent job in a restaurant, but soon is fired and starts to fight as an ultimate solution.
Eminem raps his story on a chair, in an old hall, illuminated by two reflectors, while a representation of Sia is placed into a locker room and next to a ruined building, to perform the chorus of the song. They are only the messengers of the fighter’s struggle, the focus of the video relying on his attempts to find a purpose of his existence. In addition to his professional failure, he has a difficult relationship with his father, as well as his financial situation is becoming more difficult, affecting the relationship with his partner. He finds in boxing the way to surpass his fears and solve his daily troubles, managing to draw the attention of his father and the wonder of his former employer.
‘Guts Over Fear’ was included on Eminem’s compilation ‘Shady XV’, launched in August 2014, a sample of it being used in the trailer of the film ‘The Equalizer’. The hip hop song with R&B and electro influence was created the artists themselves Sia and Eminem, accompanied by Luis Resto, Emile Haynie and John Hill, previously written songs for Shakira, Rihanna, Andrew Wyatt, Lana Del Ray, Don Was or Patti Smith. John Hill and Emile Haynie also mastered ‘Guts Over Fear’. The song was released as the second single promoting Eminem in 2014, after the collaboration with Busta Rhymes in ‘Calm Down’ and the fifth single in Sia’s performance, following ‘Big Girls Cry’.
The video of ‘Guts Over Fear’ was released in November 2014, based on Detroit’s scenes, the traditional background of most videos released by Eminem. The creative team Syndrome collaborated with Eminem in the case of ‘3 AM’ and ‘Berzerk’, also designing successful videos of Fall Out Boy, Rita Ora and Kiesza. The story of fighting fears is represented by the star of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Alexander Wraith and America’s Next Top Model participant Chantelle Brown-Young.
