My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark by Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy is a pop punk band that has Patrick Stump as the lead singer and guitarist, Peter Wentz as the bassist, Joe Trohman as guitarist, and Andy Hurly as drummer. The band was formed in 2001, from Wilmette, Illinois. They become more mainstream after their album From Under the Cork Tree. The majority of their albums were released between 2003-2008, and in 2010 they announced they were going on a hiatus.
Now, 3 years later, they are releasing the album Save Rock and Roll in April, 2013. The lead single is “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” was released in early February, 2013, right after Fall Out Boy announced that they were returning from their hiatus.
The band wrote the song, but generally Peter Wentz is the main writer for their music. The video was directed by DONALD/ZAEH which is a directing collective that includes both Adam Donald and Andrew Zaeh. Adam Donald has directed music videos, commercials, documentaries, short and feature-length films in the past. Andrew Zaeh has been in creative positions at major labels that included producing videos and helped the visual branding of many popular acts. The video was filmed on location at Old Comiskey Park in Chicago. This is the location of the Disco Demolition Night in 1979. The music video also stars 2 Chainz.
In the music video for “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up), 2 Chainz has kidnapped Fall Out Boy. 2 Chainz and two women start a bonfire and are burning Fall Out Boy’s instruments, albums, and anything connected with Fall Out Boy. 2 Chainz pulls out a flame thrower and makes the fire even larger. The video ends with the band in the back of the van with their hands tied and sacks over their heads. This video and much of the promotion for the new album has old Fall Out Boy merchandise being burned. The meaning is that the new album of Fall Out Boy may be a departure from their older style and this may please some fans and disappoint others.
The new song “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” does have a poppy anthem chorus that could be featured in movie trailers and commercials. While the meaning of the song is ambiguous, the lyrics do seem to be about starting a new and the band having a new style that is different from their earlier albums. The feel of the song is darker and edgier than their earlier music.
