Carry On by Fun
Fun is a New York City-based band that has been singing together since 2008. The style of music is generally independent pop rock or alt rock. The band is a three-piece who all star in the video with most of the filming taken place in and around Grand Central Station in New York, the city where the boys in the band are from.
The video was directed by Anthony Mandler and many of the band members had recently completed a tour before shooting the video. The Fun band member had not slept in their own beds for six months due to the demands imposed on them by the tour and the video.
Mandler not only directed the video but acted as cameraman for much of the footage using a small shoulder-mounted camcorder. The particular single Carry On is a much slower paced number than the band’s usual style of fast-paced power pop and begins with footage of the boys looking exhausted after another hared working gig.
Then the band members enjoy an egg Benedict in Grand Central Station while mulling over the gig they had played earlier. The boys also enjoy a cocktail and a toast to another successful night before walking along some side streets ofNew York, and then back to another huge café before eating and drinking some more. The café has crystal chandeliers and is located inside Grand Central Station’s concourse.
Later in the video the band members head back to the hotel room after collecting their guitars, drum sticks and jackets. At this point the band members, who appear to have finished up for the evening, go back on stage and perform another gig, before heading off to another cocktail bar where they enjoy a number of shots. The band members in the video then head into a local bar, where they meet up with a number of friends who begin to join them in having a drink where later some of the band and friends then start to play some music. One plays a piano, while other strum along on a guitar.
It is in an intimate bar where the band’s members then perform the single to a small but delighted audience. During the next part of the video the lead vocalist, Nate frolics around on the concourse of the Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station. The display takes place late at night while the station is rather empty and then shows yet another gig, another bar and further exhausting schedules. However, as the band says in the video – they just “Carry On”.
