‘Fancy’ is a glamorous mixture of electro and hip hop, promising to keep you in good mood all day. The song suggests the idea that people should enjoy their freedom and leave behind any social appearance, being fancy meaning being oneself, as Charli XCX argues in the chorus: ‘I’m so fancy, you already know/ I’m the fast lane from L.A. to Tokyo’.
The scenario of the video makes you remember of 1980s, with never ending parties, insane riding or sensual dancing on the school’ sports ground, since having fun was a daily objective of the young people determined to enjoy every moment rather than getting involved into mature issues of life.
‘Fancy’ debuts with Australian singer Iggy Azalea searching in her wardrobe the perfect match of her daily outfit at high school. Comparing with the character of ‘Clueless’, Cher Horowitz, performing the same fashionable task, Iggy Azalea is using a modern computer, similar to a tablet. The next scenes represent Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX in the classrooms, on the sports ground, at a party or on a highway.
The message is that originality is the best feature of a teenager, as Iggy Azalea raps: ‘I be the I-G-G-Y, put my name in bold/ I’ve been workin’, I’m up in here with some change to throw’.
‘Fancy’ was written by the two artists, along with Kurtis McKenzie and produced by The Invisible Men team.Initially, the song was named ‘Leave It’ and was leaked online in December 2013. In February 2014, Azalea released another version of the catchy song, featuring the English singer Charli XCX.
The video of ‘Fancy’ was shot in the same month, in Los Angeles, being released at the beginning of March 2014. Azalea was transformed by Director X into a high school star of Beverly Hills, while Charli XCX represented the prototype of school bestie of 1980s. Director X, also known for his collaboration with Usher, Drake, David Guetta or Nicki Minaj. The connection with a famous movie of that period is obvious: outfits, attitude and even the location of the scenes shot remind of ‘Clueless’.
