The Other Side by Jason Derulo
Jason Derulo, whose real name is Jason Desrouleaux, is a singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. Derulo got his start in the music business as a record producer and songwriter for many other popular artists including Birdman, Diddy, and Lil Wayne. Since then, Derulo has been making a name for himself in the music industry as a solo artist.
His self-titled debut album was released in 2010 after signing with Warner Bros. and Beluga Heights Records. Derulo has still been working with other artists such as Demi Lovato and Kelly Rowland, and he opened for Lady Gaga on her Monster Ball tour. Derulo also started his own record company called Future History.
The song “The Other Side” comes from Derulo’s upcoming third album which is scheduled to be released sometime in the fall of 2013. It is the first single from that album, and it was released in April of 2013 from Warner Bros. records. “The Other Side” was written by Derulo, Joshua Coleman, and Martin Johnson. The music video for the song was directed by Collin Tilley. Tilley has worked with other artists such as Nicki Minaj, Austin Mahone, Sean Kingston, and Justin Bieber. The music video was produced by Luga Podesta and Brandon Bonfiglio. London Alley Entertainment was the production company. The music video was also released in April of 2013, and there is another version of the music video called the dance edit that only features Derulo dancing.
The official music video for “The Other Side” begins like a movie with the credits flashing across the screen as it pans across a bedroom floor. There are then different scenes with Derulo singing the song by himself, frolicking with his girlfriend in a bedroom, and dancing alongside backup dancers. Sometimes Derulo and his girlfriend are seen holding each other, sometimes sitting on opposite sides of the bed, sometimes cuddling and taking pictures of themselves with a cell phone. Then, at one point, Derulo and his girlfriend are seen in a car laughing together.
Towards the end of the video, Derulo gets into a fight with his girlfriend. They throw pillows and Derulo punches the wall. The video features a lot of scenes of Derulo dancing with backup dancers in a club like atmosphere with strobe lights and spotlights.
The song “The Other Side” is about crossing the line between being friends and becoming lovers. The first verse talks about the singer’s developing relationship with his girlfriend as they “smile in the photo booth” and “talk all afternoon.” During the chorus, the singer tells her to take him “to the other side” as “sparks fly” and he sees that “look” in her eyes. At the moment, they won’t be “friends anymore” but “lovers for sure.” The singer pleads for her to “kiss me like its do or die” and “take me to the other side.”
