The music video for “Dance Again” by Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull is an energetic, upbeat, colorful, sexy video. The song is the first single off J.Lo’s newest album Dance Again… the Hits, a greatest hits compilation album. The video begins with a simple quote in white script against a black background: “Remember… you will live, you will love, you will dance again.” And then, as Jennifer Lopez videos have been known to do, it gets sexy. With people defying gravity, a pile of writhing scantily clad bodies, a classic dance break, and even some product placement, this video covers all the bases.
A team of long-time J. Lo collaborators wrote “Dance Again”: Nadir “RedOne” Khayat, The Chef, Enrique Iglesias, Achraff Janussi and Armando “Pitbull” Perez. Lopez fell in love with it, saying, “I love the message of the song, that when something bad happens, your life is not over. You have to get up. You’re going to live. You’re going to be okay. You’re going to dance again.” Another old friend of Lopez, Paul Hunter, was selected to direct the music video. They had worked together previously on the videos for “If You Had My Love”, “Papi”, and “Feelin’ So Good”. Casper Smart, Lopez’s dancer boyfriend, stars along side her in the video, performing an eye-catching duet with Lopez choreographed by Frank Gaston, Jr., which received a MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Choreography.
The video debuted in April 2012 as part of an episode of American Idle and was met with some controversy. While some critics focused on the song’s upbeat energy and overall positive message, others couldn’t get past the overly sexual themes, commenting that American Idle is supposed to be a family friendly show. But the version aired on television was tame compared to the version found on Jennifer Lopez’s personal page. In the original, there’s pole dancing, a barely-clothed floor dance implications, blindfolds, shirtless dancers, and a healthy portion of Lopez’s famous booty. Oh, and Pitbull is there, too. With a fantastic dance break, a strong beat, and a catchy chorus, this video will definitely make you want to dance again, too.
