“On the Floor” by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull is the first single off of Lopez’s seventh studi album, “Love?”. It was released on February 8, 2011 by Island Records, and features the Latin rapping phenom Pitbull. “On the Floor”, written by Bilal Hajji, Kinda Hamid, Gonzalo Hermosa, Ulises Hermosa, Achraf Janussi and Pitbull and RedOne (who also produced) can be said to fall into the new genre of electronic pop/dance, and was first performed on the 2011 season of “American Idol”. It follows a lyrical development similar to many current club/pop songs, referencing the singer’s desire to dance with her mate on the floor, while imploring others to do the same.
The music video for “On the Floor” was directed by TAJ Stansberry with choreography designed by Frank Gatson. Uniquely, Lopez held an open casting call for kids who wanted to appear in the video, pursuing a unique and authentic feel for the video which portrayed the love of dance about which the song speaks. Additionally, Lopez Gatson, and Stansberry were trying to capture the changing and in-flux nature of today’s underground dance circuit, repeatedly announcing casting calls via popular outlets such as MTV News. Filming for “On the Floor” video occurred between January 22-23, 2011. The video charts Lopez’s movement into and through a club, as well as her actions over the course of the evening. It begins with Lopez entering the club at night, and then follows her as she appears to take on several personas. At one point, she is the “queen bea” of the party, complete with a beehive bun and gold heels. At another point, she is in black harem pants, dancing on the floor, as the title suggests. The video also features several other outfit changes as well as product placement (she gets out of a BMW, patrons of the club she is attending are repeatedly shown drinking Crown Royal, and at one point she is clearly shown wearing Swarovski earrings).
“On the Floor’s” video finally premiered on the March 3, 2011 broadcast of American Idol, as well as Jessica Lopez’s VEVO Youtube Channel. The video received mainly positive reviews, with critics applauding the genuine feel of the club scenes and a return to Lopez’s past as queen of the clubs. Currently, on the floor has over 586 million hits on Jennifer Lopez’s VEVO Channel.
