Confident by Justin Bieber ft. Chance The Rapper
‘Confident’ is the story of an attractive young lady, who drew the attention of the singer, but behaves as if she doesn’t care. Justin Bieber feels like he is captured into a spider web, her web, following her everywhere, searching for her and finally kissing her to show he is also ‘confident’.
The classical electro pop style of Justin Bieber is seasoned with the hip hop performance of Chance The Rapper, an Asian American artist, who also influenced few details of the scenario: the streets where Justin Bieber follows his target are crowded with Asian symbols, as well as the club where a party started.
The search of Justin Bieber for a ‘confident’ girl was associated with the image of his former relationship with Selena Gomez. If that was his intention, this is something that isn’t precisely shown by the video’s scenario. The girl who managed to steal his heart is blonde-haired, she likes crispy food and she is very determined to not give up her pride. The video is interrupted two times for small conversations between the two teenagers, but those episodes don’t affect the development of the story.
The ‘confident’ girl can’t be seduced with few common words, as Justin Bieber attempted during his first siege, she is different from other girls (a woman who uses her brains, according to Chance The Rapper’s verse) who would fall for it, as consequence he has to think of something else. Leaving the market where they met by motorcycle (a sign of power, independence), Justin Bieber thinks he would never see her again, until a friend lets him know she is at the party. This time, he doesn’t try to apply any common seduction strategy, he simply kisses her, a gesture that convinces the ‘confident’ girl that a relationship with Justin Bieber is worthy.
The song was released on December 2013, being the last excerpt of Music Mondays series. The video was shot in the same month, an argument to believe that Justin Bieber was sure that the song would be positively received.
Colin Tilley is a young director, aged 25, but still with mature vision, since he worked with Enrique Iglesias for ‘Heart Attack’, 50Cent for ‘Girls Go Wild’ or David Guetta for ‘Just One Last Time’. Justin Bieber is one of his favorite artists, since the American director also designed ‘Never Let You Go’, ‘U Smile’, Fa La La’ and ‘All That Matters’.
