Bound 2 by Kanye West
Kanye’s music video, Bound 2 (definitely explicit!) was produced by Kanye West himself, and directed by fashion photographer, Nick Knight.
West, along with his topless fiancé Kim Kardashian, star together in the video, intimately cruising on a motorbike alongside various green-screen backdrops of Utah’s Monument Valley. The actual video took place in North London’s Park Royal Studios.
The music video had its official debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, November 19, 2013. Originally recorded by Ricky Spicer in 1969, the former member of Ponderosa Twins Plus One, a 1970’s soul group
The video and its message have plenty of room for interpretation for those who are fans and arriving for the first time to Kanye’s style. The video is a tasteful and artful expression, where Kanye uses his own relationship with Kim Kardashian as the animus of his message.
It is a classic production by Kanye himself, where he even utilizes the confederate flag on the jackets of his tour merchandise, claiming to nullify the message of racism and hatred by replacing the flag with his own image. Kayne’s angle is that he uses the images to create the expression that he is mocking the “All-American” traditional way of life.
In many ways Bound 2 represents the inner psychology of Kanye and through the various scenes, we are taken into his inner self and how he feels about love, the possibilities of family, and of course, the devotion given to Kim Kardashian. In the mish mash of flying eagles, purple mountain tops, redwood forests, and white-chopping river waves, the Cowboy/Pax Americana brings forth the symbolism of not only great beginnings, but the love of passion’s freedom and how a man can have it all if he finally finds the one he loves.
The music video takes us through several “all-American” scenes, which appear similar to stock video footage of American landscapes. The songs’ lyrics are based on becoming a father, or a family man as his true to life fiancé is always at his side as they tour America. One idea for the concept behind the video is that Kanye and Kim are riding in the same direction on the motorcycle, and they are looking at each other, but also looking in opposite directions. This could be interpreted as the idea that Kim and Kanye truly know each other, because even though they are looking opposite directions, they are together as one.
Kanye is known for his exploitative videos and in Bound 2, he doesn’t tame a thing as he utilizes the value of rap and hip-hop, along with the near Sci-Fi special effects and the blue-screen silhouettes of Kim Kardashian, Kanye infuses two ideas at the same time into a creative art out of the tension brought from his songs and lyrics. The Americana of running horses in the back ground, intense affection from himself and Kardashian, the appearance of the motorcycle, and aggressive power puts Kanye on the map within his own distinct creative island.
