This Is How We Do by Katy Perry
An old man watches a picture in a dark room and suddenly everything comes to life. It’s not magic, it’s Katy Perry’s desire to have fun with her friends. Captured in an old picture, the artist animated everything through music: she starts to move inside the picture, hosting a colorful universe, making everything and everyone dance.
Dressed in a vintage yellow outfit, Katy Perry is soon surrounded by friends and joyful animations such as walking cakes, flying watermelons or fish swimming in the sky. Everything is possible in her inner world, because she controls the beat, as she argues in the end of video.
Katy Perry quickly changes the background of her universe, since she wants to try new experiences as much as possible. Her living room is a crowded place full of friends greeting each other. During the next scenes she is playing tennis, going to beach, driving a car or mocking Mariah Carey’s style, while Aretha Franklin is considered a model to follow. Her thoughts are accompanied by a suite of funny animations such as flying fish, walking ice cream or cakes, a masked man who is probably her next boyfriend or flying persons. There isn’t a clear difference between sky and earth, since Katy Perry isn’t interested by this details, she only wants to enjoy her freedom, the colorful universe being her personal space.
“This Is How We Do” is included on Katy Perry’s fourth studio album released in 2013, “Prism”. The joyful song about friendship and originality in a world of uninspired copies was written by Katy Perry, with the help of Max Martin and Klas Ahlund, one of her traditional collaborators. The two musicians also produced the song, being responsible for successful hits performed by Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue or Sugababes. “This Is How We Do” was released on August 2014, presenting a new Katy Perry, adding to her classical hip-hop passion a vintage urban style, similar to “Last Friday Night”. A remix version of the song includes the rapping performance of Riff Raff.
The video accompanying “This Is How We Do” was released at the end of July 2014, featuring a chameleonic Katy Perry, going with her friends to a beauty salon, performing karaoke or flirting. New Zeeland director Joel Kefali completely understood the artist’s playful mood, creating funny cartoon images to represent her thoughts such as dancing ice cream or bitten watermelon. Joel Kefali also created for Alicia Keys the video for “Beats”, for Tune Yards the video dedicated to “Water Fountain” or for The Presets “Promises”.
