Swimming Pools (Drank) by Kendrick Lamar
With the help of T-Minus’ production expertise, K-Dot is able to bring platinum expertise to life. The number two single to come out of Lamar’s debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city is brought to life under the expert direction of Jerome D. In August 2012, the “Swimming Pools (Drank)” vibrant story came to life across American and around the world surging Kendrick Lamar even further into the hip hop heavens and history.
Of course Kendrick plays himself throughout the video, from the smooth white clad chain slinging dancer to the Mr. Slick dress falling through the eternal abyss of blackness, he slides through the story in style. Sherane as she is known haunts and taunts him throughout. “Swimming Pools” details and legacy are not common fodder as is often the case, but we do know Sherane is an image from the past.
So what is it the K-Dot is trying to tell us about the past? Maybe about the present? Or maybe even about the future? Kendrick portrays the pain and agony of an alcohol world with distinct and descriptive mannerisms. His swing style and fall into seeming never ending blackness is symbolism to the highest degree. In the video his words are descriptive, but his imagery carries the message home to the heart. Beginning the video dressed to the nines and decked to do the world yet falling into nothingness, “Swimming Pool” sets the stage. Continuing in the theme of struggle he is reaching and yearning as he is losing control falling in the alcohol pool.
The pool again can be symbolic or literal. A pool of alcohol in which to drown the sorrows, aches, and pains of the world; a pool of affection, courage, and strength from which to draw on and find courage, strength, and popularity? The pool is also symbolic of the pool of genetics and the blame we can lay.
We can blame many people and many things, but we decide in the end. Unfortunately, Kendrick has to share the story of what others do to us in trying to destroy us as they are destroying themselves. Taunting him as though he’s a wimp into drinking more and more until he is near death. He is struggling throughout in his words, his form, and his flow. Struggling to survive or let go. Finally, he shares success and the way to win as he allows a friend to help him out of the pool.
