Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released a new video in April 2013 showcasing their new song called “Can’t Hold Us” which features Raymond Dalton and took ten weeks to shoot, produce and direct to the finishing stage. The song was written by Benjamin Haggerty, Ryan Lewis and Patricia Davies and was produced by Patricia Davies, Honour Kimmerar, and Jennifer Koeniger.
Naturally the stars of the video include the duet of Macklemoore and Ryan Lewis and the guest feature is from Raymond Dalton. There are a number of violin pieces on the video which include contributions from the likes of Caroline Faflik, Gerrard McFarlane and Eliza Cleggs.
The video and song were put together in studios in Seattle in Washington and Brian Gardener completed the mastering and editing sections of the video from studios based in Hollywood, California. The opening scenes of the video feature some wonderful wintry settings with mountains, snow-covered trees and a man carrying a flag through the snow-covered woodlands.
The flag appears to be similar to that of the Stars and Stripes but where the stars would normally be the words “The Heist” are written instead. Then a number of huskies are seen pulling along a sleigh and the song begins to move into a kind of anthemia beat.
There is also a shot of an ancient ship sailing on a cold lake where we then see our first look into a more modern mode of transport when a small plane is seen taking off and flying around the edge of the lakes. The scene then changes drastically to one of a warm desert with a small amount of scrubland before the video then goes back to the old ship where several people are dancing on the deck.
It is here on the ship’s large upper deck area that many of the stars of the video sing and perform while sailing the high seas. The song has a strong leaning towards rap or hip hop music and the main performance continues unabated on the ship’s deck.
The scenes are often reverting back to the desert where a dreadlocked man is leading a camel over a number of dunes. In the next scene the camel is being led by lead singer Macklemore down a housing estate. The old sailing ship is then seen in the harbour of the famous city of Seattle in Washington and a city skyline feature is shown as a backdrop to the old sailing ship.
