Same Love ft. Mary Lambert
Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, is a rapper who has skyrocketed to fame with a string of mega-hits. Although Macklemore has been releasing independent music since 2000, he collaborated with Ryan Lewis for his latest album called The Heist in 2012. Ryan Lewis is a producer, DJ, and musician who has produced, engineered, and mixed all of their music.
Macklemore’s breakout hit was entitled “Thrift Shop” and it has sold more than 2 million copies. The duo has also reached the top of the charts with their hit “Can’t Hold Us.”
The song “Same Love” is the fourth single from the album “The Heist” and it also features vocals from Mary Lambert. “Same Love” was written by Macklemore along with Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert, and Curtis Mayfield. The song was written in support of Referendum 74 in Washington State that legalized same-sex marriage. The music video for the song was directed by Ryan Lewis along with Jon Jon Augustavo. Augustavo has also worked with artists such as Little Nikki and Sammy Adams. The music video was also produced by Tricia Davis and features a same-sex couple and their relationship.
The music video for “Same Love” opens with a white light and slowly the light fades to show a woman in a hospital delievering a baby. After the baby is born, the mother holds the child. In another scene, a group of kids is seen riding their bikes and hiking through the woods. There are more scenes of children playing, girls playing with dolls, boys climbing trees. There are shots of one particular guy playing football, attending church, and playing Spin the Bottle. Throughout the many different scenes are two men who are obviously gay as they struggle but ultimately get engaged. Towards the end of the video, the two men are seen getting married in a church and Macklemore makes a quick appearance as a guest at their reception. The video then fast forwards to when one of the men is dying in hospital with the other by his side. The video also features a lot of archival footage of the struggle for human rights in America.
The song “Same Love” has a strong message in support of gay rights and opposes homophobic comments in mass media and culture. “Same Love” starts out with Macklemore telling us his story about thinking he was gay when he was in third grade and the stereotypes he encountered. The song states that America “still fears” what it doesn’t know and how “right wing conservatives” think that being gay can be cured with “treatment” and “religion.” The song compares oppression of gays with that associated with gender and skin color and criticizes how people use the word “gay” on message boards and in songs. “Same Love” also criticizes hate speech in churches and supports fighting for gay rights with same-sex marriage as a place to start.
