Wasted Love by Matt McAndrew
“Wasted Love” is Matt McAndrew’s debut single, following his performance at The Voice, the seventh season. The song is pop-rock ballad, accompanied by piano, describing the feelings associated with a disappointing relationship.
“Wasted Love” is divided between moments of solitaire performance of Matt McAndrew and couple’s episodes, describing their happiness, as well as their disillusionment related to the evolution of their relationship.
The video debuts in a dark room, where a young woman enters, bringing joy to the artist. While she seems to sleep barefoot, outside in the garden, he admires her as the most precious presence in his life. The scenes associated with the couple’s happiness are interrupted by Matt McAndrew’s moments on the piano. The director of the video immediately changes the perspective to another scene that describes sense of completeness felt by the artist as the game of colorful strips or her attempt to wear his boyfriend’s glasses.
The happy moments displayed are disrupted by an image, that suggests the idea of potential separation: a shadow of a bird toy drifted by the wind. Although they are enjoying their time, his girlfriend leaves the room for an unknown reason, sadly leaving for the garden, to think of their relationship. A similar scene shows the woman listening to music through Beats headphones, melanchollically glancing to a mysterious target, probably the artist. The video ends with a piano scene, Matt McAndrew ends his song, closes the piano keys and directs his look to a distant destination on the window, as the sign of a new beginning.
The song was written by a group of Canadian musicians including Chantal Kreviazuk, famous for Armageddon’s soundtrack; Shimon Moore, member of the Australian rock band Sick Puppies; Mike Fiorentino, contributing to Nashville’s soundtrack, and Sterling Fox, current collaborator of Avicii and Tiesto, who is also its producer. “Wasted Love” is a pop-rock song with soul elements, similar to Maroon 5 style, the influence of Adam Levine as coach being noticeable.
The video created for “Wasted Love” was directed by Tabitha Denholm, known for her dedication to create spectacular videos in the case of The Voice’s stars. The British director designed “My Baby’s Got A Smile On Her Face” (Craig Wayne Boyd) or “Soldier” (Damien).
