All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor
Meghan Trainor is one of the USA’s latest pop revelations. Hearing her for the first time, you have the impression that Beyoncé’s strong R&B style joined the softer ‘Back to Basics’ style proposed by Christina Aguilera. Born in a family of musicians, Meghan Trainor was encouraged to experience as many musical styles, in order to create her own identity. Today, the 21-year-old star performs pop, reggae, country, soca and even hip hop.
“All About That Bass” is her debut single, released in June 2014. The song can be considered an ironical parody of what beauty means in American society. Dressed like a traditional college student, Meghan Trainor dances as a disconnected Barbie puppet and critically sings about Photoshop, skinny vogue and unnatural behavior. The main idea of the song is that we don’t have to pretend being Barbie and Ken, since we are all different and beautiful in every single way. The fact that she throws a Barbie toy and that she dances next to an overweight young man is her personal message to teenagers and adults forcing to be somebody else.
Every detail used in the video highlights this idea. In the debut of “All About That Bass”, Meghan Trainor wears a pair of white bunny ears, reminding of Playboy style, that she gave up, in order to display her long hair with blue and pink strips. The dancers accompanying her behave in a similar way, in the end of the video all of them start riding on colorful bicycles, as sign of their untouched freedom, to be what they want to be.
Although Meghan Trainor doesn’t precisely name a false beauty icon, the fact that she uses three blond long-haired models can be an irony of Lady Gaga’s style. Besides the extravagance of her outfits, Lady Gaga imposed a skinny style, that isn’t globally healthy. In order to be more persuasive, Meghan Trainor argues that the lies we see on TVs shouldn’t be considered rules to be applied in daily life, which is in fact as normal as possible, meaning that men enjoy natural women.
“All About That Bass” is written by Meghan Trainor, with the help of Matthew Norman and Kevin Kadish, who is also its producer. The song will appear on Meghan Trainor’s debut album, that will be released probably this autumn, “All About That Bass” follows the medium success registered by Meghan Trainor with “Take Care of Our Soldiers” (2010) and “Who I Wanna Be” (2012).
The video of “All About That Bass” was directed by Fatima Robinson, considered one of the best American choreographers. She signed the choreography and participated as assistant or director in “Just Fine” (Mary J. Blige), “Fly Away” (Lenny Kravits), “Turn Off The Lights” (Nelly Furtado) or “Take Care” (Drake & Rihanna).
