Waves by Mr. Probz
“Waves” is one of the songs that become famous, as a remix, soon after the official release of the original version. Previously launched in November 2013, “Waves” draw the attention of radios and electronic fans in the summer of 2014, as a remix created by Robin Schulz, currently one of the prodigious German DJs.
“Waves” is Mr Probz’s biggest success, after “Hate You” in 2011. It’s followed by a song written in the artist’s native language, Dutch. Simultaneously with the release of the remix in Europe, Mr Probz launched “Waves” in USA, in April 2014. An electro song was an unmatched challenge for the Dutch hip hop artist, but the result surpassed his expectations, since “Waves” managed to become popular in almost every European country.
The story of “Waves” is a simple one: sometimes we feel as drown, the waves around us are the metaphors of common situations, threatening to overcome our actions. In Mr Probz’s song, a man is stranded on a desert island, after having fought with his girlfriend. He tries to survive, feeding on coconuts, walking for hours for a shelter, but everywhere he turns he sees the face of the supposedly unfaithful lover.
The video is a mixture of recent events and flash back moments of happiness, fuelling his desire to stay alive. Besides the unpopulated island where the video was shot, viewers will also be carried around old Mexican sites, local neighborhoods, as well as a luxurious hotel. In the pool of that hotel, the man intensively drinks, to forget his pain and he awakes unexpectedly into the ocean, floating without any destination. Is it a dream? Is it a real? The ambiguity is the center of the video, the director of “Waves” considering the two realities as the two sides of the same coin.
Dreaming or effectively being isolated on that island is less important than the fact that the man has to start understanding the water around him. It could be source of regeneration, both for body and soul, or it could totally destroy him.
The video promoting “Waves” was shot on the sunny seaside of Mexico, in Tulum region. The beautiful landscape wasn’t complete without the appearance of Maryna Linchuk, a Belarusian model and the dramatic performance of James Penfold, playing the artist’s emotions. “Waves” was created by Petros Papahadjopoulos, who also collaborated with Ellie Goulding (“Guns and Horses”), Foo Fighters (“Hung Up”) and Incubus (“Black Heart Inertia”).
