Muse’s song “Madness” was released in August of 2012 and has been climbing the charts all around the world ever since. The song was written by Matthew Bellamy and released by Warner Bros. The music video for the song was directed by Anthony Mandler and produced by Christene Cobb and Heather Heller.
The production company for the music video is Black Hand Cinema. The director of photography David Devlin was nominated for an award for his work. The video was filmed in Los Angeles at the Red Line platform of Union Station. Besides the members of Muse, the video stars models Max Silberman and Erin Wasson as the man and woman.
At the beginning, the video begins with the couple smoking cigarettes on a train. Policeman in riot gear are seen outside in the train station fighting off another group of what appears to be the rioters. After the song stars to play, the members of Muse are seen playing their instruments while Bellamy is singing. The woman is seen walking towards the train platform.
The man sees the woman from a corner and then follows her. While the two are standing on the platform, the fight between the police and the rioters breaks out causing all kinds of mayhem. The man and woman pull each other close in the midst of the chaos and watch what happens. They also kiss. The video ends the same as it started with the couple sitting on the train smoking with the fight going on outside.
The inspiration for the song “Madness” was a fight between Bellamy and his girlfriend. The song speaks about the seemingly madness of relationships, both the memories and the “crazy fights.” The verses describe a relationship that has a degree of insanity in it, and the singer wonders if it is really love that has been keeping them together or just madness. The chorus describes a kind of revelation that singer has. The singer describes having “seen the light” and realizing what the other person meant. The end of the song offers some hope for the relationship by pleading with the other person to “come and rescue” him but admitting that their “love is madness”.
