Somebody ft. Jeremih by Natalie La Rose
The Dutch singer Natalie La Rose made her debut in music industry with ‘Somebody’, an electric duet with the American rapper Jeremih. Based on Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’, Natalie La Rose’s first single is a dynamic R&B song with hip-hop influence, based on an everlasting theme: being attracted by a special person.
Pink is a recurrent element in Natalie La Rose’s video, as her name means ‘rose’ in French, as flower and as color.
The scenes of ‘Somebody’ are shot in a pink garden of flowers, her flurry toys are pink, while lights displayed in the night club or in the greenhouse, where Jeremih performs, include a pink shade. Most of her outfits are pink or are based on pink accessories, the only exception being the dress worn in the night club, based on a metallic grey nuance.
The attitude of Natalie La Rose is a contradictory one, in the majority of the scenes she dances sensually next to Jeremih or accompanied by her dancers, splashing the rainwater or boxing to an invisible target as a sign of indifference related to any critics she may receive for her new relationship, while in few of her individual scenes she is displayed in a pink teenager room, surrounded by flurry toys, expressing her fragility.
The relationship between Natalie La Rose and Jeremih might fuel the imagination of both artists’ fans, since they share intimate gestures as the mark for making silence, while their tender gestures in the greenhouse might suggest a strong collaboration.
‘Somebody’ was released in January 2015, being written by two ascending musicians, Krystin Watkins and Rook Monroe, creating songs for Drake and Lil Wayne. Krystin Watkins is responsible for the electropop influence of the song, while Rook Monroe currently rapping in ‘On Your Own’ featuring Reazy Renegade designed the hip-hop participation of Jeremih. The song was mastered by Dj Mustard, The Futuristics and Cook Classics, producing ‘Moonshine’ (Bruno Mars), ‘I Cry’ (Flo Rida), ‘L.A Love (La La)’ (Fergie) or ‘It Ain’t You’ (Jordin Sparks).
The video of ‘Somebody’, launched in February 2015, was directed by Luke Gilford, focusing on commercials as in the case of Prada’s 2015 campaign ‘The Future of Flesh’. The American director mixed common backgrounds for a young woman as Natalie La Rose, such as a college campus or a night club with unconventional backgrounds as luxuriant greenhouse, reminding of her connection with roses or the presence of marble statues in the night club.
