Nicki Minaj, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, is a singer, songwriter, and rapper. She released her first studio album in 2013 and has since made another album in 2012 entitled Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Minaj’s songs are characterized by fast paced lyrics and catchy beats.
Her singles “Super Bass” and “Starships” have reached the top of the charts and have become some of the best-selling singles in the United States. Not only is Minaj a rapper and singer but she has also started making inroads into television and films. Minaj did a voice for the movie Ice Age 4: Continental Drift and has appeared on the TV show American Idol as a celebrity judge.
The song “High School” appears on the album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up. This album is a reissue of Minaj’s second album, and it was released in April of 2013 by Cash Money Records, Republic Records, and Young Monkey Entertainment. The song was written by Nicki Minaj, Matthew Samuels, Tyler Williams, and Dwayne Carter. Carter, also known by his stage name, Lil Wayne, is also featured on the song. The music video was directed by Benny Boom and produced by Luga Podesta and Brandon Bonfiglio. The video was filmed in Los Angeles, and besides Minaj and Lil Wayne, it stars rapper Birdman and actor Emilio Rivera.
The video begins with Minaj shown walking by a pool in a pink bikini. The pool looks out at a gorgeous landscape. Lil Wayne and Birdman show up at her house to meet her husband “El Jefe” who is seen with henchman. Minaj is seen rapping along with the song in the hot tub and on the lawn of the house. When the guys come inside, Minaj is coming down the stairs. She and Lil Wayne make eyes at each other and flirt.
The two guys give a duffel bag, supposedly full of money, to the husband, the mafia don. Lil Wayne also raps his verse by the pool. In the video, Minaj supposedly has an affair with Lil Wayne while her husband is not around. Towards the end, Minaj is seen robbing the house. She and Lil Wayne then make their escape by helicopter as the husband watches them leave.
The song “High School” is about a guy that comes from Jamaica illegally without any “papers.” He gets mixed up with drugs, women, and money. Minaj raps the song from the point of being one of his women. She alludes to the fact that this “ain’t high school” and how the possibilities are endless. Lil Wayne’s verse talks about fighting with his girl, and how she wants him to make her his wife. The song continues with Minaj rapping again about how this isn’t high school anymore and ends with a few suggestive lines.
