CoCo by O.T. Genasis
“CoCo”, as the abbreviation for cocaine, is one of the most unconventional songs released during the last decade, directly affirming the passion of an artist for a drug. The American rapper O. T. Genasis, became visible in the arena of hip hop and rap, due to a collaboration with Busta Rhymes, “CoCo” being the second noticeable success after the remix of “Touchdown”. The song reminds of his Belizean origins, being included Latino words such as “loco” (crazy) or “nino” (child).
Debuting in a diffuse background, “CoCo” highlights the satisfaction that a drug such as cocaine can render to its users. O. T. Genasis is accompanied by his friends, one at the table, while the other one is sitting on the fridge. The background is modest, a common room, where the men are drinking, playing cards and consuming drugs. This image is alternated with a night scene, when O. T. Genasis is driving a convertible car. In most of the scenes, the rapper is displayed as alone, the collective episodes are limited such as the scene of drugs’ transaction, when he and his friends seem to play with their guns, in an attempt to threaten any unwanted presence.
Besides cocaine as the image of the addictive passion, the stacks of dollars as sign of worthiness are recurrent details. O. T. Genasis proudly displays them, counts them and throws them on the table. Money is only an accessory for the rapper, he needs it to buy more cocaine, as shown in the image of the backpack crowded with packs of drugs. Cocaine is like a game of cards that he uses to play, he might lose, but he might also win, as suggested by the card Ace of Hearts implied to separate the cocaine on his table.
The video ends with the image of a woman, who mysteriously delivers a pack to one of rapper’s friends and finally puts ice cubes in O. T. Genasis’ cup, ready for additional consumption of alcohol and drugs.
“CoCo” was released on 27 October 2014, as a leading single for the upcoming studio album of O. T. Genasis, scheduled to be launched in 2015. The song is exclusively written and produced by the artist, including hip hop and trap influence.
The video promoting “CoCo” was released on 13 October 2014, being directed by Dre Films, a young director, associated with famous rappers such as Drake and Lil Wayne (“The Motto”) or Rick Ross (“Devil In A New Dress”). “CoCo” features the cameos of Busta Rhymes, DJ Khaled and Timbaland.
