Steal My Girl by One Direction
“Steal My Girl” is the lead single promoting One Direction’s fourth studio album “Four”, released in 2014. The optimistic pop-rock song was launched in September 2014, focusing on a common issue among teenagers such as stealing the girlfriend of a friend or colleague.
“Steal My Girl” debuts with the image of a desert, where the members of the band appear from a modest trailer, asking for the director of their new video. The technique is borrowed from literature, presuming that modern characters can ask or even revolt against their creator.
There is no plan for the creation itself, since few men in the background move the elements of the décor, while in the farthest plan of the background viewers can notice two white giant hands reminding of Buddhist statues. Once the director arrives, One Direction find out that they have to create beauty in the name of art, being not very persuaded by the artist talking with his mouth full. Each member of the band receives a code name (Love, Light, Power, Danger and Mystery), becoming elements of director’s vision.
Successively, the members of the band will enter into a new universe, according to their code names. The bringer of Power smashes silver balls and fights next to sumo wrestler, the representative of Light dances along with an African tribe, the leader of Power becomes the chief of a marching band, the representative of Love dances next to masked ballerinas, while the exponent of Danger is playing with a chimpanzee, being surrounded by a lion and flamingos. The last scenes of the video remind of colorful representations of Cirque de Soleil, everybody dancing into the rain, to express the joy they feel.
“Steal My Girl” is written by band’s members Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, with the help of Wayne Hector, Ed Brewett, John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, songwriters having collaborated before with Westlife and The Wanted. John Ryan, Julian Bunetta and Pär Westerlund produced the pop-rock song with dance influence, reminding of 1980s musical style, as well as the remix included on the same album.
The video of “Steal My Girl”, released on 24 October 2014, was directed by Ben and Gabe Turner, known as The Partners, previously created for One Direction “You and I”, “Midnight Memories” and “One Way or Another”. “Steal My Girl” includes the presence of famous Danny DeVito in the role of the director, as well as extravagant characters such as a chimpanzee, a lion, sumo wrestlers, a marching band, ballerinas or acrobats. The Partners display a colorful universe of joy, stressing the idea that music and dance reinforce the relationships between people, including the love story One Direction sing about.
