You & I by One Direction
Two words and a powerful message: “You & I”. There are at least ten songs in pop industry during the last decade, entitled like this or including the magical words, so the British boy band One Direction had to think of a slightly different perspective. The lyrics of the song speak of a love story, that should be unique, able to resist to any human or divine intention to tear it apart, while the video tries to combine a simple visual style with unexpected visual effects.
“You & I” is included on One Direction’s third studio album released in 2013, “Midnight Memories”. It was written by Jamie Scott, Julian Bunetta and John Ryan, the last two musicians being the producers of the song. Uncommonly to an European band, “You & I” was firstly released in USA, in April 2014, one month later being launched in Europe too. If the previous song released from the same album failed to the members’ expectations, although it was precisely the song promoting the name of the new creation, “Midnight Memories”, the last song released was a global hit.
The soft rock ballad was influenced by the rhythm of the 1990s, featuring soft piano and guitar. “You & I” reminds of Take That, another successful British boy band, but in the same time it’s an original love story, issued by the personal experiences of the members.
The debut of the video is somehow ambiguous, since the viewer can’t distinguish clearly the nature of the house on the seaside. One thing is obvious: the first member of the band descends and soon he transforms into the rest four members, at least taking in account the facial change. In addition, the road all members walk seems to be endless, as if the love story they sing won’t ever die. The sky is cloudy, stressing the main idea of the video, that nothing is ever good without your lover around.
“You & I” can be in fact considered “You & The Other Me”, since no feminine presence is displayed, only mentioned in the lyrics of the song. By contrary, each member of One Direction seems to have several alter egos they gather and merge back into their bodies. The procedure is a funny one, they play with balls, they release balloons into the air and help the alter ego not to get hurt by mistake. In fact, the alter egos seem to be memories of their love, they collect in order to be complete.
