Counting Stars by OneRepublic
OneRepublic is a pop, alternative rock band from Colorado Springs, Colorado. The band was formed by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins back in 2003. Along with Tedder and Filkins, the members of the band include Drew Brown, Eddie Fisher, and Brent Kutzle. The band rose to fame when they released their debut album entitled Dreaming Out Loud in 2007, and their hit single “Apologize” garnered enormous success both in the U.S. and around the world.
Some of the band’s other hit singles include “Secrets,” “Good Life,” “All the Right Moves,” “Feel Again,” and “If I Lose Myself.” The band has also received multiple award nominations from the American Music Awards, the Grammy’s, and Teen Choice Awards.
OneRepublic’s newest single is called “Counting Stars,” and the song comes from the band’s third album called Native. The song is the third single from that album, and it was released in June 2013 from Mosley Music Group along with Interscope Records. The song was written by OneRepublic’s front man Ryan Tedder. The music video for the song was directed by James Lees. It was produced by Danielle Hinde and Kimberly Stuckwisch. Doomsday Ent was the production company, and the music video was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana.
At the beginning of the music video for “Counting Stars,” Ryan Tedder is walking in a basement of sorts. The basement is rundown with lots of peeling paint, leaks, overhead florescent lights, and ceiling fans. Tedder joins the rest of the band on their instruments. The video then transitions to a shot of a group of people sitting in a room. When a man in a suit enters, the people stand up and clap. The man greets people as he moves to the front of the room. It is some sort of revival meeting.
The man talking and the people around him respond to what he is saying. They clap and raise their hands. At one point, the man starts praying for people and they start doing strange things like falling on the floor and dancing. There are also shots of Tedder singing all alone and of an alligator making its way through the basement. Just like the other people, the band starts getting crazy and playing frantically. At the end of the video, a man falls through the floor into the basement, and the band looks up through the hole.
The song “Counting Stars” takes a look at the choices we make but also the struggles we all go through. It talks a lot about morality and the consequences of our choices. In the chorus, the singer speaks about “losing sleep” because he is “dreaming” about what they could be. Instead of “counting dollars,” he says that it is time to start “counting stars.” The song talks about feeling “right” about what is “wrong” and feeling “wrong” about what is “right.” It also mentions our struggles when it comes to love and money.
