Home by Phillip Phillips
The debut single from Phillip Phillips, entitled “Home,” has become one of the fastest songs to climb to the top of the charts from an American Idol winner. Phillips, born and raised in Georgia, won the eleventh season of the show, and the song was used as Phillips’ final performance for the finale. Phillip Phillips co-wrote the song with Greg Holden and Drew Pearson.
It is featured on his debut album The World from the Side of the Moon which was released in November of 2012. The song has made waves across the United States, being featured on everything from TV commercials and box-office hits.
Directed by Joseph Toman, the music video for “Home” features Phillips on tour and in several different scenes of life on the road. In fact, the video was filmed over the course of the American Idol summer tour. It was specifically filmed on the way from Denver to Salt Lake City and features some incredible landscapes, some in black-and-white.
Also featured on the video is Phillips’ girlfriend Hannah Blackwell. The couple has been an item for two or three years. Some others make an appearance on the tour bus, and Phillips is seen jamming along with a group of people, although it is hard to tell who the other individuals are.
Just like the song conveys, the music video also gives the impression of being on a journey. The particular journey that Phillips is on during the video is the tour, and the music video gives an idea of what life on the road is like for him. Various scenes include Phillips playing an acoustic guitar, jamming on the bus with other people, writing in a notebook, staring out the window, having coffee at a café, looking at guitars in pawn shop, walking down the street, performing live onstage, and meeting fans. In between these scenes with Phillips are other views of the landscape and the tour bus.
The song “Home” is a hopeful song about finding a place to call home no matter where you are. In the song, Phillips is encouraging others to let go of the fear that comes with finding yourself in an unfamiliar place headed down an unknown road. In several places, Phillips is trying to reassure another person that they are not alone and to hold onto him when he or she is lost because they can always be found again. The song speaks of finding a home wherever you are.
