In 2009, the smash hit “Love the Way You Lie” took the music charts by storm. A blending of rap courtesy of Eminem and pop by Rihanna the song seemed to have something for all fans of today’s music. The song can be found on Eminem’s 2010 comeback album titled “Recovery.” “Love the Way You Lie” is considered to be one of Eminem’s most popular songs. The single went on to be nominated for five Grammy Awards and sold more than five million copies in the U.S. alone.
It wasn’t just the song that was a hit, though. The music video also had a large following thanks to the performances of Dominic Monaghan and Transformer’s Megan Fox. The music video depicts scenes of an abusive couple, who are in a constant cycle of love and hate while in other scenes shows Eminem and Rihanna standing in front of a burning house. It was later reported that Megan Fox donated her appearance fee to a battered women’s shelter called Sojourn House in response to the video’s subject matter of domestic violence.
With popularity often comes controversy as well. There was some contention that video glorified or romanticized violent relationship in the media. While, there may be some truth to that, the intention of the video seems to be more of a cautionary tale than anything else. The subject matter of domestic violence seems to make the video all the more relevant to the fans though as it was won favorite music video at the People’s Choice Awards in 2010.
The music video was directed by celebrated music video director, Joseph Kahn. Kahn is well known among music video fans having directed popular videos for artists such as Lady Gaga, Blink 182, The Black Eyed Peas and many others. Filming began on July 21, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. Kahn is a familiar director to Eminem as this is his third time directing an Eminem video to date. Kahn was especially ecstatic to land the ultra-famous Megan Fox for the video. It was Fox’s involvement that created a large initial buzz around the video.
