Addicted To You by Shakira
The Queen of Colombian rock, Shakira, strikes again, as seductive as ever. Her latest video, “Addicted to You,” is the fifth and final installment from her 2010 Sale el Sol album (English: The Sun Comes Out). Sale el Sol earned the artist a Latin Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, and received multiple nominations. A hypnotic blend of Latin and English lyrics, Shakira’s distinct contralto vocals spin through the quick and guttural lyrics in a dazzling up-tempo merengue that leaves the listener enthralled.
Director Anthony Mandler has a history of working with popular female artists such as Rihanna, Nicki Minage and Mary J. Blige. This is his first work with Shakira, but will not be his last. His work on the “Addicted to You” video rightly does justice to the song by featuring the songstress herself. As she sings to her lover, Shakira lounges in a bathtub, dances on a bed, and wanders the desert. The stunning surroundings of the Valencia, CA, ranch enhance Shakira’s natural beauty and grace without crossing over into tawdry territory. In an era when the sexuality of a songstress often overshadows her lyrics or vocals, Shakira has always excelled at being effortlessly sexy. Physically, she moves with the music and lyrics so that one gets the feeling the music is moving through her.
For years, critics and music-lovers have struggled to place Shakira firmly in one genre or another, but she simply refuses to stay put. Her clever transition to English in the chorus of “Addicted to You” is a clear reflection of her diversity, allowing listeners of both English and Spanish backgrounds to be equally mesmerized. The short switch to English also provides a catchy hook sure to be stuck in your brain for days. The VEVO music video on YouTube was uploaded 4 months ago and has received almost 50 million views. Overall, Shakira did a fantastic job her song and music video. It was very well done and loved by many!
