Chandelier by Sia
“Chandelier” is one of the videos that have to be seen twice, to completely understand the intentions of the artist. Sia introduced into the scenario a young ballerina, to express her emotions, as consequence this duality creates ambiguity.
“Chandelier” is completely displayed into a modest house with old furniture and decorations, suggesting that the living space is a metaphor of past. The teenager ballerina feverishly dances, jumping from different furniture items and falling to the floor, according to the lyrics of the song, mostly when Sia mentions words as “glass”, “eyes” in the chorus. These words are the keys of the song, “Chandelier” is the metaphor of her feelings into a period of her life, beautifully crafted as a chandelier, but subject to change, even destruction, since the chandelier is a fragile decoration item.
Dressed into an unconventional outfit, wearing a blonde wig, alike Sia, the young ballerina smiles irritated, seems to hurt herself while bending over a table and hides behind drapes, suggesting the unbearable pressure on the artist`s mind at the period of time represented into the video. Her dance is staggering, moving quickly and dramatically, according to the song’s rhythm.
“Chandelier” was included on the sixth studio album of the Australian singer, suggestively named “1000 Forms of Fear”. The song released in March 2014 can be considered an autobiographical one, taken in account the lyrics and the explanations offered by Sia. “Chandelier” was written by the artist and Jesse Shatking, also his producer, along with Greg Kurstin. The electropop ballad with reggae influences tells the story of alcoholism and its dramatic impact on families. There is no coincidence that the young ballerina dances into a deserted house, this is what`s left in most of the families affected by alcoholism.
The video created for “Chandelier” is directed by Daniel Askvill and Sia herself. The Australian director collaborated before with Sia for the creation of “Breathe me”, as well with Placebo for “Follow the Cops”. The simple, yet emotional video was choreographed by Ryan Heffington, while eleven-year-old Maddie Ziegler received the challenge to represent Sia`s perspective.
“Chandelier” as video was released on 6 May 2014, being followed by an alternative version in June 2014. The song is the first lead lead single from Sia’s latest album, following the success registered by “Elastic Heart” included in “Hunger Games” soundtrack.
