Elastic Heart feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler by Sia
Every breakup is painful, but Sia transforms it into a feverish fight for supremacy between the two characters displayed by Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler, the young ballerina performing in ‘Chandelier’. Captured into a cage, as a symbol of the limits imposed by their relationship, each of them attempts to escape, while finding freedom isn`t satisfactory, since Maddie Ziegler feels the need to return for her partner.
Dressed into outfits similar to the skin’s appearance, as in ‘Chandelier’, the characters start a dramatic fight in the cage. The ballerina with blond wig, as Sia’s representation, attacks and seems to overcome Shia LaBeouf, despite the obvious size difference. She hits, she gets on his back, making him climb on the bars of the cage, but when she seems to asphyxiate, he returns feeling sorrowful. Unfortunately for him, he is bitten, determined to fight back. Once she is out of the cage, Maddie Ziegler doesn`t feel free or happy, although she is ironically laughing, on the contrary she is willing to release him too from the restrictive universe. Although it’s impossible, due to his size, she desperately keeps attempting. Similarly to ‘Chandelier’, the characters of the video represent the story through their natural gestures, reminding of tribal behavior, as screaming or hitting, in order to defend themselves.
‘Elastic Heart’ is a song included on ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire s soundtrack’, being written by Sia, Diplo, Andrew Swanson and The Weekend. While Andrew Swanson is an upcoming songwriter, currently associated with Gauche, Diplo created successful songs for TiĆ«sto or Iggy Azalea, while The Weekend collaborated with Ariana Grande and Drake. Based on the multiple musical influences, the electropop style represented by Sia, The Weekend’s R&B touch and Diplo’s animating electronic dance rhythm, the song was released in October 2013 and included in 2014 on Sia’s fourth studio album ‘1000 Forms Of Fear’, as a solo version.
Diplo and Greg Kurstin, previously collaborating with Kelly Clarkson, Lilly Allen and Pink mastered the song. Reminding of ‘Chandelier”s style, ‘Elastic Heart’ follows the success obtained in 2012 with ‘She Wolf (Falling to Pieces)’, David Guetta’s song featuring Sia’s vocal performance.
Similarly to the video created for ‘Chandelier’, in the case of ‘Elastic Heart’, Sia proposes a network of meanings, suggestively displayed by the Australian director Daniel Askill, who formerly collaborated with the artist for ‘Breathe Me’ and with Placebo for the creation of ‘Follow The Cops’. Released on 7 January 2015, the video presents Transformers’ actor Shia LaBeouf and the 12-years old ballerina Maddie Ziegler as a couple breaking up.
