22 by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is a singer/songwriter who has made a name for herself. Besides being a musician, Swift is also an actress and has been outspoken about political issues. She moved to Nashville at the age of fourteen to begin a country music career and started working on a debut album almost immediately.
That album was released in 2006. Her next album, however, crossed over into the pop charts and made her a household name. Her album Fearless was the bestselling album of 2009. Swift has toured all over the world, dated some of the hottest stars, won numerous awards and released four albums all before the age of twenty-five. Her hit songs include “Love Story,” “You Belong with Me,” and “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
The song “22” comes from Swift’s fourth album entitled Red which was released in 2012. It was written by Swift along with Shellback and Max Martin. The song is the album’s fourth single and was released in March of 2013 from Big Machine and Republic Records. The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler and produced by Heather Heller. Black Hand Cinema was the production company. Besides Swift, the music video features a number of her real life friends. One of these is Jessica Szohr, an actress from the television show Gossip Girl. Instead of widescreen, the video was shot in 4:3 format.
The music video begins with Swift in a t-shirt, stylish hat and shorts. The formatting of the video gives a feel that it is coming from an old-fashioned home movie. Swift is seen hanging out with her friends, eating cake, and talking and laughing. There are also scenes of Swift and her friends dressed in the same clothes wearing heart-shaped glasses. Swift and her friends hang out at the pool and wave pom-poms. The girls dance along to the song and have fun with confetti. They then take a trip to the beach, hang out on the sand, and watch the sunset over the ocean. They jump on the trampoline and eat ice cream. Swift has a paper heart that keeps popping up throughout the song. Towards the end, the girls are seen putting on makeup and wearing elegant dresses as they head to a party. At the end of the video, Swift falls over backwards into the pool.
The song “22” speaks of the joys of being twenty-two, and Swift has said that it has been the favorite year of her life. The song talks about all of the fun of being young like dressing up “like hipsters” and having “breakfast at midnight.” The song also speaks about staying up all night and going to parties. In the chorus, Swift speaks about the carefree attitudes of being 22, that everything will work out in the end. She says to “keep dancing like we’re 22.”
