Blank Space by Taylor Swift
“Blank Space” is Taylor Swift’s ironic perspective upon her turbulent private life, as displayed by media. She plays the role of man-eating diva, willing to offer all her love and to ask in exchange for total dedication.
The character represented by Taylor Swift lives in luxury and extravagance, she accepts into her life the young man entering her castle, but when she feels that the attention she deserves is reduced, as in the case of smartphone scene, she starts to revenge, forcing the man to leave.
The video debuts with the image of an antebellum castle, where an attractive man stops. While he is descending from his vintage car, Taylor Swift is impatiently waiting in her bedroom, dressed in fine black suit, accompanied by a white cat and white ponies. While she gradually starts to know her partner, Taylor Swift is displayed wearing blue, silver and white outfits, each reflecting her attitude. She dances, she paints his picture and she scratches his name on trees as a sign of love.
The magic ruins, while during picnic, the young man seems to flirt on his smartphone. The result is an overwhelming storm, impossible to be controlled: Taylor Swift throws his smartphone in the pool, destroys his picture, cuts and burns his clothes and she smashes his car or the tree displaying the mark of their love. She attempts to erase any trace of him in her life, as suggested in the scene of apple’s dividing associated with the torture she felt. Once she deleted everything connected to the previous partner, she is ready to receive another man into her castle.
“Blank Space” is the second single promoting the recent album studio released by Taylor Swift, suggestively named “1989”, the year of her birth. Taylor Swift involved into the creation of the song, being helped by the famous songwriters Max Martin and Shellback. Max Martin is the recurrent collaborator of the artist, teaming with Taylor Swift in the case “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “Shake It Off”, while Shellback participated to the creation of “22” and “I Knew You Were Trouble”, both producing the new release of Taylor Swift. “Blank Space” was launched on 10 November 2014, being a pop song with electro influence.
The video associated with “1989”, also released on November 10, was directed by Joseph Kahn, also creating for Ciara (“Got Me Good”), Britney Spears (“Perfume”) and Shakira featuring Rihanna (“Can’t Remember To Forget You”). In the case of Taylor Swift, the American director chose two different locations to display the artist’s disillusions: Oheka Castle and Woolworth Mansion. Model Sean O’Pry played the role of Taylor Swift’s potential boyfriend. The end of the video includes few behind the scene images, shot at 360° and configured as the pages of a diary.
