If I Didn’t Have You by Thompson Square
Thompson Square is a country music duo. The band is made up of husband and wife Keifer and Shawna Thompson. Keifer is from Oklahoma while Shawna is an Alabama native. The two had solo careers before meeting in Nashville, Tennessee at a competition.
The duo has released two studio albums so far from Stoney Creek Records. Their second album entitled Just Feels Good came out in March of 2013. Thompson Square’s previous hits include the songs, “I Got You,” “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” and “Glass.” Keifer and Shawna Thompson have already been honored with a Country Music Award for Top Vocal Duo in 2012.
The song “If I Didn’t Have You” comes from the duo’s second album Just Feels Good. It was released in October of 2012 by Stoney Creek Records as the first single from that album. “If I Didn’t Have You” was written by Thompson Square along with Paul Jenkins and Jason Sellers. The song has done well on music charts in the United States as well as Canada. The music video was directed by Brian Lazzaro and produced by Nicole Flammia and Eric Williams. Tacklebox films was the production company. The music video features both Keifer and Shawna Thompson, and it was released in February of 2013.
The video starts off with Keifer and Shawna getting into a car in front of a house. Supposedly, they are headed for a night out. The pair is seen smiling and laughing in the car and being affectionate. Shawna begins to sing, and then the car is seen being hit by another vehicle. In the next scene, Shawna is being wheeled on a gurney in a hospital.
At the chorus, Keifer is seen sitting next to Shawna’s bed as he sings. Shawna’s soul sings along with him. Other scenes in the hospital show the doctors working on Shawna, Keifer talking to the doctor, playing his guitar in the room, and holding Shawna’s hand as she lies in a coma. At the end of the video, Shawna wakes up and the couple kisses.
The song “If I Didn’t Have You” is a love song, but it also expresses the difficult times that couples sometimes find themselves in. The first verse speaks of the rain pouring down and never stopping. However, the chorus expresses hope in having sometime to go through life with. The singer says that “life would kill me if I didn’t have you.” It makes similar expressions of love throughout the song. In the other verse, the singer expresses how the other person compliments them. When they are weak, the other is strong, and they were made for each other. The song speaks again of not being able to make it through life without the other person and not wanting to go on alone.
